The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Lexile: 600
Rating (out of 5 stars): 5 stars!
Book Review by Mrs. Burnham: This book is one of my favorite books to recommend to teens, particularly boys, because the main character, Junior, is a realistic, funny, and smart character. The book is about Junior's journey in striving to live a life beyond his Indian reservation where the problems are complex and dark. In the middle of his school career, Junior decides to leave the reservation school to attend a predominantly white school off the reservation. In his journey, Junior tries to find himself while facing stereotypes, fighting, and understanding his culture. The illustrations in the book are simple, yet hilarious, and add an unexpected insight into Junior's outlook on his life.
